What is Pesarattu? The Protein-Rich Andhra Breakfast You Need to Try
Share
If you've never heard of Pesarattu, you're in for a treat. This traditional Andhra Pradesh breakfast is one of India's most nutritious morning meals — and one of its most underrated. Made from whole green moong dal (green gram), pesarattu is naturally high in protein, rich in fibre, and requires no fermentation — making it one of the quickest healthy breakfasts you can prepare.
What is Pesarattu?
Pesarattu (పేసరట్టు) is a crispy crepe or dosa made from whole green moong dal (pesalu in Telugu), ground into a batter with green chillies, ginger, and cumin. Unlike regular dosa, pesarattu batter does not need to be fermented — you can soak the dal for a few hours and it's ready to cook. The result is a thin, crispy, vibrant green crepe with a distinctive earthy, wholesome flavour.
Pesarattu is a breakfast staple in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, often served with upma stuffed inside (called MLA Pesarattu) or simply with ginger chutney and karam podi on the side.
Why is Pesarattu So Nutritious?
- High in plant protein — green moong dal contains ~24g of protein per 100g
- Rich in dietary fibre — supports digestive health and keeps you full for longer
- Low glycemic index — ideal for diabetics and those managing blood sugar
- Packed with vitamins & minerals — folate, magnesium, potassium, iron, and zinc
- Antioxidant-rich — green moong contains flavonoids that fight oxidative stress
- Easy to digest — lighter on the stomach than many other legume-based foods
- Naturally gluten-free — safe for those with gluten sensitivity
